Kevin Rinkel makes it two in a row at South Sound Speedway.

For the second time in as many weeks the Vintage Mods showed up to race at South Sound, this time on a cloudy day. The weather has been beautiful so far this season so the threat of rain was a change. There was one good long shower that eliminated most of the hot lap sessions. After that passed there were droplets in the air the rest of the evening but never enough to wet the track. The group welcomed new car and driver #33 Pete Tice out for the first time this year.

Kevin Rinkel once again set the fast mark of 14:91. He really wants the track record currently held by Jim Jones. Rinkel just needs to find a bit more than a 10th of a second.

No dashes on this night so drivers got right to it with the heat races. The B heat was lead off by Ike Hoskinson and Dave Trapp who timed in on a flat tire, again. Trapp led all 8 laps easily and was followed by Charlie West Jr. and Hoskinson.

The A heat was run caution free as well. Mike Clother started on the pole next to Bob Fulmer. When Clother spun his tires at the start Fulmer took the lead followed by Bobby Wheeler Jr. Jim Jones was right on Clother’s bumper but good brakes keep the two apart. Fulmer led all 8 to win this heat.

The scheduled 30-lap main saw Henry Weichel on the pole with Robert Rux on the outside. Clother and Fulmer made up the second row followed by Paul Field and Jones. Weichel took an early lead pulling Clother and Field with him. Rux went spinning in turn one when Fulmer’s brakes didn’t work good enough to avoid heavy contact. After a short caution period, in which Fulmer opted to start from the rear, the field made a single file restart. Weichel maintained the lead while Field worked on the rear bumper of Clother with Rinkel passing both on the outside. Contact sent Clother loose up the track into the door of Rinkel who completed the pass anyway while Field used this event to pass Clother on the back straightaway. Clother returned the bumping favor in the next turn and Field was unable to keep his car on the track. The caution flag flew and Clother was asked to restart from the rear. He did so without argument allowing Field to start ahead of him. By this time, lap 9, Rinkel had taken the lead from Weichel and Wheeler had moved to 3rd. West and Rux were 4th and 5th. The top 5 remained the same for the remaining 20 laps. Further back in pack Field appeared to be the only car doing any passing in spite of a bottoming out problem that made his car appear to be out of control at times. Chuck Peterson became a victim of one of Field’s slides and was unable to finish. Jim Jones also didn’t finish due to a recurring oil leak. Field managed to work his way to 6th place followed by Trapp. Fulmer won the battle with Clother for last place “honors”.

Next stop for the Modified group is the big 4th of July open wheel extravaganza at Port Angeles Speedway.
